What is a Schultüte?

How to fill the Schultüte

One of the most exciting parts of creating a Schultüte is deciding what to fill it with! Traditionally, it contains a thoughtful mix of practical school essentials, small gifts, and a few delicious treats to make the first day of school even more memorable. Classic favourites include crayons, pencils, stationery, stickers, small toys, books, or a favourite sweet or two. You could also add a new lunch box, a matching water bottle, a cuddly cushion with your child's initial, a fun alarm clock, a little purse, magnetic letters, a photo album, or anything else you know will make your child smile. The possibilities are endless! A little tip: try not to overfill the Schultüte, as your child will proudly carry it on their very first day of school. In Germany, it's often only opened once everyone is back home, turning the moment into a special family celebration and a wonderful way to end an unforgettable day. To make things a little easier, I've put together a collection of stationery and little gifts inspired by the items my own children loved most over the years. I hope they spark a few ideas and help you create a Schultüte that's just as unique and special as your little one.

About Schmidtify and me

As a mother of two wonderful children, I have always been drawn to the world of arts and crafts. Through their eyes, I rediscover the wonder, curiosity, and quiet magic of childhood, where every creative moment becomes a shared little adventure. The Schultüten Project has evolved into something deeply meaningful—a boutique collection born from a love of beautiful papers, delicate shimmer, vibrant ribbons, and carefully considered details. It is a celebration of craftsmanship and the joy of helping families create an unforgettable first day of school. Whether you delight in making things by hand or prefer to entrust the process to a creative studio, the intention remains the same: to offer every child a Schultüte that feels personal, thoughtful, and truly one of a kind. Creativity has always been at the heart of my world. I have never shied away from bold colour palettes, sparkling textures, or expressive patterns, and over time, friends began to affectionately describe my style as “Schmidtified”—a playful nod to my instinct for transforming the ordinary into something distinctive and full of character. That spirit of joyful transformation became the foundation of my brand: a name that honours individuality, celebrates imagination, and brings a touch of sparkle to everyday life.

HIT - Help in time

A Project Close to My Heart Just like Schmidtify, HIT – Help in Time is a true heart project. For many years, HIT has been supporting children and families in Cape Town through small community initiatives that create lasting change. The organisation believes that even the smallest act of kindness can inspire hope, open new opportunities, and help children dream a little bigger. That's why every Schultüte means more than creating a magical first day of school. Together with HIT, we also make sure that children in need receive a Schultüte of their own, allowing them to experience the same joy, excitement, and sense of belonging as they begin their school journey. Because every child deserves a magical start.
